Welcome to all our members, old and new! We are an awesome, friendly group who like to talk Python over pizza and beer in Brighton.

This meetup will see a talk from Dr Eleanor Jayawant, a Research Fellow in Laboratory and Computational Systems Biology from Brighton and Sussex Medical School, share with us how they are trying to cure Cancer with Code!

Dr Eleanor uses Python (and Julia) to understand signalling in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), one of the most common types of blood cancer. The current treatment for DLBCL cures only 60% of patients, in part because the disease is so different from one patient to the next. They use experimental systems biology alongside a bespoke Python analysis pipeline to characterise different levels of proteins in different DLBCL cases, running ordinary differential equation-based simulations using Julia to try to model the reactions in the DLBCL cell of a patient. “If we can understand differences in patients, we can use a personalised medicine approach to make sure we’re getting the right drug into the right patient!”

We will also hear from Sid Dhuri, Director of Data Science at IGT, on his talk on behavioural modelling with ML. This will delve into how humans make decision employing different mental systems and why it is so difficult to model behavior. Sid asks, “Can machine learning be used for behaviour modelling?”

As always, if you can’t be with us in person there will be a live stream of the event, which you don’t need to sign up to watch. Check back nearer the time for the link.
