SUMMARY:Forecasting Vegetation Conditions Indicators in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the last BrightonPy event of the year!\nWe are pleas
ed to have Chloe Hopling and Dave Bottrill speak at our last event of th
e year\, alongside the opportunity to chat with our community over pizza a
nd drinks.\nChloe\, a Data Scientist and Research Fellow at the University
of Sussex\, will be sharing her work on 'Forecasting vegetation condition
indicators for pastoral communities in the Greater Horn of Africa'. She w
ill be telling us how they have developed a python based pipeline\, AstroC
ast\, for forecasting vegetation condition using earth observation data an
d machine learning regression techniques.\nThe goal of this project to use
these forecasts in drought early warning systems to potentially reduce th
e human and financial impact of droughts in the region. Python is used thr
oughout the AstroCast pipeline and the talk will cover the key steps in th
e pipeline including\, processing geospatial data\, forecasting with Gauss
ian process regression and data visualisation.\nDave's talk will help with
'Writing Python extensions in Rust'\, the full content tbc\, and Laura Ma
wer\, Data Science Consultant from Datacove will be sharing a recap of EAR
Lconf 2024.\nAs ever\, we will have pizzas\, refreshments\, and opportunit
