What inspired you to speak at EVOLVE [25]?
I have followed the Silicon Brighton story and team since the beginning. I have loved being involved and supporting the team. This event is one that Brighton has needed for a long time, so I was really excited to be involved. Being asked to speak was exciting, and I also loved helping behind the scenes to make the day a success.
What was the key message or idea you most wanted the audience to take away from your talk?
That working on inclusion is not about compliance or a side-project. It’s at the core of the work of every company. especially technology and creative companies. If you are creating products and services that you want the world to use, or solving big problems with innovation, then you need to include different perspectives at every stage.
Were there any audience reactions or questions that really stood out to you?
It was such an engaged audience for the panel with lots of questions. It was great to hear people taking this seriously and asking us about tangible actions they can take.
How does the topic you spoke about connect to your current work or passion projects?
It’s central to the work I do, the volunteering I do and the work I speak and write about. It’s absolutely my passion. And the tech and creative industries are where my passion sits to create an inclusive world of work. It’s about creating environments where inclusion is central to everything.
What emerging trends or challenges in tech (or your field) are you most excited about right now?
That discussions are becoming less separate about things like inclusion and sustainability. These are not side discussions, this is all central to product, service and company designs.
What advice would you give to someone looking to make an impact in your area of expertise?
Do your research and learn about subjects, ideas, stats, language and different thinking so that you are informed.
How do you see the future evolving in your industry over the next few years?
More and more automated ways of doing things. Which is why inclusion is so important. We have a responsibility to make sure that technology and designs include everyone.
What was your favourite part of the EVOLVE experience?
Helping on sign-in, it was hard work, but it meant that I got to say hello to so many people!
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, initiatives, or goals you’re excited to share?
A new company…Edge Of Difference, it’s keeping me very busy.
