Brighton-based Plus Accounting, a B Corp chartered accountancy firm, reflects on its long-standing, strong relationship with Silicon Brighton and its involvement with EVOLVE from the very beginning. The team also shares how it supports ambitious businesses across Sussex and beyond, its B Corp journey, and what’s next for its work in new industries.
Tell us a bit about what you do and how you help people?
Plus Accounting is a Brighton-based chartered accountancy firm working with ambitious businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals across Sussex, the UK and internationally.
We provide much more than traditional accounting and tax compliance. Our team supports clients with everything from day-to-day accounting, tax and audit through to business advisory, growth planning, outsourced finance and specialist areas such as R&D and the creative industries.
We have particular experience working with technology, video games and other innovative businesses, helping founders and management teams understand their numbers, navigate change and make confident decisions about what comes next.
What difference do you make in the world?
We want to make a positive difference to the businesses we work with, the people within our team and the wider community around us.
As a B Corp certified business, that means thinking beyond financial performance and considering the impact we have on our people, communities and environment. We support local charities and community organisations, provide volunteering opportunities for our team, work with schools and young people, and continue to look at ways we can use our skills and resources to create a positive impact – financial literacy is a big part of our decision making and we look to support this in all our partnerships.
At client level, we hope the difference is equally practical: giving business owners greater clarity, confidence and time to focus on building successful and sustainable organisations.
How and why did you first get involved with EVOLVE [26]?
Plus Accounting has been involved with Silicon Brighton and EVOLVE from the beginning, and it felt like a very natural community for us to support.
Brighton has an incredibly strong technology, creative and entrepreneurial ecosystem, which closely aligns with many of the sectors we work with – particularly technology and video games. We wanted to support an event that brings those communities together while also giving our team the opportunity to meet founders, business leaders and other organisations shaping the future of the region.
Our continued involvement reflects how much we value that relationship and the community that has grown around EVOLVE.
Why do you think events like EVOLVE are good for the city and the region?
One of Brighton’s greatest strengths is the diversity of its business community, but the real value comes when those different parts of the ecosystem connect.
Events like EVOLVE create a space for founders, established businesses, investors, advisers and future talent to meet and exchange ideas. Those conversations can lead to collaborations, introductions, investment, new clients or simply a different way of looking at a challenge.
They also help showcase Brighton and the wider region as a serious place to start, grow and develop an innovative business – something we are very keen to support.
What did you get from the day? Tell us about any outcomes or impact.
For us, the value of EVOLVE is as much about the quality of the conversations as the number of them.
The day gave us the opportunity to reconnect with people we already know within the community, strengthen existing relationships and meet new businesses and founders. It also gave our team a useful insight into the challenges and opportunities businesses are currently experiencing.
Some conversations naturally create immediate opportunities, while others develop over time. That is one of the reasons we value being part of EVOLVE – it is about building genuine, long-term relationships within the community rather than simply attending a one-off event.
What were your highlights and main takeaways from the day?
The energy in the room and the openness of the conversations were definite highlights. There is something particularly valuable about bringing people from different stages of the business journey together and giving them the opportunity to share experiences.
Our main takeaway was that, despite businesses facing plenty of uncertainty and change, there is still a huge amount of ambition and innovation across the region.
It was also a useful reminder that businesses increasingly value advisers who understand their sector and their ambitions, rather than simply providing a service in isolation.
Back to you: What company initiatives or projects are you most proud of?
There are several, but becoming a certified B Corp has been an important milestone for Plus Accounting and continues to influence how we develop as a business.
We are particularly proud of the work our team does within the local community, from volunteering and charity partnerships to supporting schools, young people and organisations across Sussex.
We are also proud of the specialist sector expertise we have developed, particularly within video games and the wider creative and technology industries. Working closely with businesses in these sectors has allowed us to build a team that understands not only the accounting and tax landscape, but also many of the commercial challenges businesses encounter as they grow.
What are the perks of working with / for you?
We like to think the biggest perk is that we genuinely get to know the people and businesses we work with.
For clients, that means having an approachable team who understand their business, their sector and what they are trying to achieve – with access to specialists when they need them.
For our team, we aim to provide a supportive and flexible working environment with opportunities to develop, get involved in the wider business community and contribute to causes that matter to them. Our B Corp commitments also encourage everyone at Plus to play a part in how we continue to improve as a business.
Do you have any projects, initiatives or events coming up that we should know about?
There is plenty happening at Plus.
We are continuing to grow our work within the video games, technology and creative sectors, including supporting and attending industry events and creating practical resources for businesses operating in these areas.
We’re also entering the next stage of our B Corp journey, with further community, volunteering and environmental initiatives planned, alongside continuing to develop how we use technology and digital tools to make working with us as straightforward and valuable as possible.
And, following our membership of MGI Worldwide, we’re excited to be able to combine our local expertise and relationships with access to an international network of independent accounting firms, supporting clients whose ambitions increasingly extend beyond the UK.
Anything else you would like to share or promote?
If you are building or growing a business – particularly within technology, video games or the creative industries – we’re always happy to have a conversation.
You don’t necessarily need to have a specific accounting question. Some of the most useful conversations start with understanding where a business is heading, what challenges are coming next and where the right advice or introductions could make a difference.
And, most importantly, we’re looking forward to continuing to be part of the EVOLVE and Silicon Brighton community and seeing where it goes next.
