Another fireside chat has landed! This time we welcome the multi-award-winning founder of Breakthrough Incentives, Sue Nelson. Breakthrough Incentives is a UK-based Research & Development (R&D) independent tax consultancy that specialises in supporting companies accessing R&D tax relief through the Small to Medium Size Enterprise (SME) scheme.

Sue used her design and illustration skills to develop her own brand, one that had design and her quirky humour at its heart. She set up the tax company with vibrant branding to stand out from the generic, blue competitors and decorated it with her own art. Sue developed the specification for the IT infrastructure and commissioned the client contracts. The company began trading in April 2015 and went from a zero base to a £2.5m profitable turnover company in just 5 years. In March 2020 Sue sold her company to the multinational professional services company, EY (Ernst & Young). Up to the end of March, the company had processed over 1,000 R&D tax claims, generating more than £60million for small tech businesses across the UK –an average of nearly £50,000 in cash or tax relief per claim. In the process, this led to the creation of around 150 new jobs.
